W9CAP is the Amateur Radio Club of the Illinois Wing, Civil Air Patrol. While membership is restricted to CAP members, if you are interested in expanding your radio operating skills to include formal traffic handling and public service, we hope that you will visit a squadron near you and consider joining. We routinely operate “aeronautical mobile” and that has it’s own challenges. We have a very large nationwide HF presence and conduct nets several times each day. We also have both fixed and airborne repeaters located throughout the state. A directory of squadron locations and contact information may be found here: Illinois Wing Units.

SPECIAL EVENT STATION
Commemorating Civil Air Patrol’s 76th Anniversary
December 2, 2017 (1200z) thru December 3, 2017 (2359z)
Beginning on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 1200z (6:00 AM Central), the Illinois Wing Civil Air Patrol Amateur Radio Club will conduct a Ham Radio Special Event Station (W9CAP) to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Civil Air Patrol performing volunteer missions for America. This is your chance to make contact with those stations across Illinois (including an aeronautical mobile station at 10,500 feet altitude [weather permitting]) and receive a special QSL card. Be sure to thank those members for their volunteer service and ask how you can get involved in CAP too (Hams have skills we need). The event will end on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 2359z (5:59 PM Central).
The planned frequencies are:
- 28.450 MHz USB
- 18.125 MHz USB
- 14.250 MHz USB
- 7.225 MHZ LSB
Frequencies used are subject to change based on band conditions and activities. Be sure to hunt for W9CAP stations on all active Amateur HF bands and on the DX Clusters (and, as always, we appreciate you spotting us). You can also monitor, in real-time, the bands/modes that we are on and the contacts that we are making on the status page below:
