Illinois Wing Members Visit Washington DC
Thirteen Illinois Wing members joined hundreds of other Civil Air Patrol members to participate in Legislative Days 2017. The Illinois Wing contingent travel by air, van and car to arrive by Wednesday March 1. Leading the pack was Col Jerry Scherer, Commander Illinois Wing with Lt Col Harold Damron, Lt Col Jim Bartel, Lt Col Robert Taylor, Lt Col Bob Dempsey, Maj John Fletcher and 2Lt MaryAnn Schofield. The four cadets selected for this years activity were C/Lt Col Josh Lambert, C/2Lt Matthew Schofield, C/2Lt Sara Schofield and C/2Lt Alejandro Trevino. Joining the cadet cadre were C/Lt Col Jodie Gawthrop and C/1LT Laivi Grossman who were in Washington DC for other cadet activities. Cadets were asked to go back to their units and encourage more cadets to submit applications for next years legislative days.
Illinois Wing members met with twenty legislators or their staff on Thursday to discuss the importance of Civil Air Patrol and it’s contribution to the country and America’s youth. After a long day of walking the hill members met for dinner at a restaurant in “Crystal City” to talk about the days activities and all that was accomplished. Later in the evening they were joined by Great Lakes region Commander Col Edward Phelka.
On Friday the cadets and the seniors visited Arlington National Cemetery, The Capital Building and The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The cadets and most seniors departed for Illinois on Saturday morning. Col Scherer stayed behind to attend more Winter Board meetings.
