10-M-0124 MISSION CLOSED February 22, 2010 0100 Z
Upon arrival at the coordinates provided by the AFRCC, the UDF team was unable to detect an active 406 EPIRB, or any other distress signal. The search area was a residential neighborhood near East St. Louis, Ill. AFRCC reported to the IC that there was negative contact on the last three satellite passes, so the UDF team was ordered to return to base and the mission closed. Prior to recall, the UDF team employed standard ground search techniques to try and locate the signal.
Mission IC, Lt. Col. Rick Oeth [photo], expressed his appreciation to the UDF team, Lt. Col. Ted Lohr, Maj. John Brendel and 1st. Lt. Lee French for their timely response to the mission. In addition, Lt. Col. Paul Hertel served as MIO and Col. Joe King as MSA.
10-M-0124 MISSION OPEN February 22, 2010 2254 Z
AFRCC has alerted the IL Wing to locate and silence an "unregistered" EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) at specific coordinates near the St. Louis area. Since it is in an urban area, the IC has dispatched a local UDF team that will be on site within one hour. At this time, no additional resources are needed.
If the UDF team does not pick up the signal, an alert will be sent out to mobilize air and ground crews to continue the search.
You will be kept abreast of new developments. The Mission Tracking page of the IL Wing PAO website will be activated in a short while.
10-M-0094 MISSION CLOSED 06 FEB 2010 2110 Z 1510 CST
IL Wing ground teams acquired a signal while traveling on I-90. Using their ground-based direction finding radios, they were led to a private airfield called the Landings Condominium Airport (82IS) in Huntley, Ill. The original C-172 assigned to the mission was diverted to DuPage County Airport (KDPA) so that the pilot could join the crew of the Great Lakes Region GA-8 which has state-of-the-art DF equipment. Both the GA-8 and the ground teams converged upon the Landings at about the same time. Ground team leaders used the scenario to train some new members on DF techniques.
The AFRCC controller complimented IL Wing on it’s reliability to locate and silence ELTs in a timely and professional manner without the aid of SAR Satellites..
In total, 24 members participated in the search efforts. Another 15 were on standby ready to deploy if needed. Maj. Taylor expressed his deep appreciation for all who responded to his request for volunteers.

Various airborne ELT signals on 121.5 MHz reported in general location of Kankakee (KIKK) Illinois. AFRCC has no reported missing or overdue aircraft at this time.
Two ground teams are forming and will stage near Peotone (EON) VORTAC. A third team is forming in Group 22 and will deploy to the area when ready.
The call is out for an aircraft and aircrew. Since the SARSAT no longer search for ELT signals on 121.5 MHz, aircraft with direction finding (DF) capabilities are vital to pinpointing the signal so a ground team can find and identify its source.
