Every 17 minutes a person dies by suicide; 86 people take their own life each day; and another 1,500 attempt suicide in the United States.   Visit the link below to learn more.

Suicide – Illinois Facts

SUICIDE IN THE UNITED STATES

Approximately 6 immediate family members and close friends are affected by each suicide.

For every adolescent suicide, there are an estimated 100 to 200 suicide attempts.

For every adult suicide, there are an estimated 25 attempted suicides.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24.

Suicide is the fourth major cause of death for adults 18 to 65.

Veterans are at increased risk of suicide.

Mental health diagnoses are generally associated with a higher risk of suicide.

Approximately 90% of people who completed suicide suffered from 1 or more mental disorders.

The risk of suicide is increased by more that 50 percent in depressed individuals.

Remember, suicide doesn’t care who or what you are in life.


QPR: QUESTION PERSUADE & REFER

QUESTION:    Don’t be afraid to ask if someone is considering suicide.

:    Use strong words:  “I want you to live.”  Use strong ears:  Listen.

REFER:            9-1-1, if necessary.  1-800-273-TALK (8255) or 1-800-SUICIDE
